Pause for Reflection #5 - Questions for transforming the way we live
“It’s a hard time to be a human”…this statement that appeared in US Wellbeing Coach Renee Trudeau’s latest blog was #pauseforreflection – number 5! In some ways I concur which makes it doubly important to live consciously and deliberately – to not be consumed by the struggles, sadness and suffering that are present in our lives and around us. There is also a lot of joy and joy is everywhere if you let it in and keep an open curious mind.
Reflecting on a conversation I had only yesterday over lunch with a girlfriend, I’m not sure that it’s any harder now to be human. We spoke of our grandparents and the struggles they faced during war, depressions, and migration across the globe. I feel there may have a been a golden age as I grew up in the late sixties and seventies. We had just enough technology for personal use to make time for recreation that was simpler, and more connected – with out any devices. University days weren’t complicated by possible easier ‘plagiarist’ tendencies that computer users avail themselves of today – everything was researched, compiled and handwritten the old-fashioned way. We managed to do our European sojourns without mobiles and the internet – and parents savoured the weekly (or monthly) call home. Don’t get me wrong, technology has its advantages – think medical science, or baby capsules that have saved thousands of lives in car crashes, better and safer transport options all round, instant personal connections or the way it has helped us connect globally to make travel, trade and the sharing of information easier and faster.
I do think that technology has also complicated our lives somewhat. The stress a mobile notification beep creates is well documented. Not to mention the harm we are witnessing on social media platforms. Teenage mental health is at an all time low. We are constantly bombarded….if we let it!
The key is building in some discipline around simplifying your life by simply not engaging…easier said than done. But it is possible.
I love what I read in my emails this morning- the suggestion that we experiment by only engaging in 3 Apps and get rid of all the rest – x1 for social, x1 for messaging and x1 ‘wildcard’ (music, entertainment or transport)…Wow! Imagine that?
So, this week’s #pauseforreflection challenge is
How can I live more simply and with love?
As ever, the challenge - To truly understand that what we give out eventually comes back to us.
Until next time….Keep Shining,
Trish x
