As I #pauseforreflection over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been reading a lot about the benefits of being still, contemplation and going slower. Despite the health, creative, performance and soulful benefits, as a society we are so resistant to the concept of stillness. The ego likes to be busy! My challenge to you this month is to find a little time in each day to stop and be still…perhaps just 20 minutes. It may mean sitting on a park bench during your lunch break; taking to a quiet room or corner in the house before the morning rush; to sit or lie and treat those arising thoughts as clouds moving by in the sky – letting them go. Every thought that arises represents another opportunity to return to what I call your inner cathedral of peace and stillness – a deeper way of knowing. For me that represents thousands of opportunities every time I try to sit in stillness!. And then there is that beautiful thing that makes us human - our imagination. The window to your soul!
On a practical level, we could all be better at saying no and setting boundaries – actually taking on less and re-prioritising. To do less is more:
D Dedicate more time to the people and things you love
O Opportunity - as counterintuitive as this feels, being still or doing less represents an opportunity to more open awareness and a deeper way of knowing and connecting with your inner wisdom, and your imagination!...great for problem solving.
L Listen more, talk less. Really observe and hear with your heart as well as your mind
E Revisit your Expectations – around work, your routine, family obligations. Ask, whose expectations are you trying to meet and do they serve you?
S Be Satisfied – philosophical and theological texts are filled with the benefits of surrendering, detaching to the outcome of things especially as we usually have no control over the things that pre-occupy us most. Practice the Possibilities Mindset Mantra of ‘I am enough, I have enough, I do enough’
S Be Still – something we can all harness. To be truly still and access the inner quiet we all have available to us
Creating some ‘space’ ensures we live consciously and with intention. It allows us to be present. “Real presence” John O’Donohue tells is “is the goal of truth”. The world needs more truth and when we live in truth, I believe we contribute to a world with more peace and harmony. If more of us were still and deliberately engaging with the impact of our ‘busyness’, there would be more grace and compassion.
Dedicate time to deciding what to do with your time – do less and live more consciously, deliberately and more slowly! Find time to pause for reflection.
So my question to you this time is
How can I do less, reflect more and make time to be still?
As ever, the challenge - To truly understand that what we give out eventually comes back to us.
Until next time….Keep Shining,

By looking at and developing awareness about how we live, lead and work, we can create a powerful sense of 'knowing' and consciousness about what impact we have on our own lives, our health, others around us and our environment. By tapping into this wisdom, we can grow, change and live a fuller, rich life and make positive and enlightened contributions. We not only believe but know that LEADERSHIP IS A RESPONSIBILITY AND IT IS SACRED – Leaders have real-time impact on a community’s stability, sustainability and collective wellbeing.
