Pause for Reflection #8
This month’s #pauseforreflection coincides with some big life events – universal and personal. It’s the beginning of May, but I’m reflecting on April – when 1/3 of the world’s population identified with Easter and the sacredness of that time; and ANZAC day that in one shape or form touches all of us as we continue to witness conflicts on the world stage.
On a personal level, celebrating birthdays, a wedding anniversary, the anniversaries of the passing of both my mum and dad in recent years and finally the passing of Pope Francis – the first Jesuit Pope which holds some personal significance not least because, Jesuits, who are often described as the rebels of the Church, taught my grandfather and Pope Francis had showed enormous courage in uplifting the voices of gay people and of women in the church.
So where does one go from here? The overriding theme I have in mind is renewal ….traditionally, Easter is all about renewal. It’s about history and hope as well as the ability to take advantage of the pause after a big “disordering” ahead of the renewal or reordering. That pause is represented by Easter Saturday – the day ‘in-between’. Regardless of your faith or convictions, renewal is available to all of us and an important part of a life-well-lived-cycle.
Renewal can come about as a result of a number of things – for instance, at the start of a new day, a change of season, a new job, a new relationship or moving house. It can also be the gift from consciously seeking out some quiet or retreat.
New situations that require renewal can come about voluntarily, conversely it can come about from things that are out of your control, like when we have disorder that requires some re-order in our lives (the notion that our constantly moving life cycles include order, disorder and re-order….coming about from loss, grief, separation, hurt, suffering or surprise). I’m reminded of a quote from Peter Marshall "When we long for life without difficulties, remind us that oaks grow strong in contrary winds and diamonds are made under pressure."
Renewal often requires us to surrender – which does not mean giving in, or stopping our plans or dreams, but rather, as Richard Rohr puts it, “a peaceful opening that keeps the conduit of living water flowing to love”. Life, love and grace are always going to win.
Renewal is available to you any time. So consider,
What does renewal mean for you right now?
To leave you with some more words from R Rohr:
“The promise of new life dawns, and we will appreciate its light because we know the darkness…. Honour the mystery. Be still in the spaces between suffering and renewal/reorder. Have trust that in the falling we will again come to a place where we can shine.”
As ever, the challenge - To truly understand that what we give out eventually comes back to us.
Until next time….Keep Shining,

I not only believe but know that
LEADERSHIP IS A RESPONSIBILITY AND IT IS SACRED.
By looking at and developing awareness about how we live, lead and work, we can create a powerful sense of 'knowing' and consciousness about what impact we have on our own lives, our health, others around us and our environment. By tapping into this wisdom, we can grow, change and live a fuller, richer life and make positive and enlightened contributions. Leaders have real-time impact on a community’s stability, sustainability and collective wellbeing. Therefore Leaders have a responsibility to their own wellbeing.
The challenge - To truly understand that what we give out eventually comes back to us.
